Description

Isuzu Sohma, more commonly known by her nickname Rin, is one of the recurring characters of the anime Fruits Basket and Manga series. She is the Horse of the Chinese Zodiac. A cold, stubborn, proud, and fiercely independent woman who despises the way the other members of her clan submit to Akito Sohma, Rin is very closed-off as a result of her abusive and traumatic past. Since she was rejected by her parents, Rin lives with Kagura Sohma and her family. Rin had a romantic relationship with Hatsuharu Sohma prior to the beginning of the series, but she later breaks up with him in order to protect him until she can find a way to break the curse. In Fruits Basket Another, she is married to Hatsuharu and is the mother of twin children Sora and Riku. Rin is a beautiful young woman who stands at above average height with hip length, jet black hair, dark brown eyes, a light complexion, and a slender figure. She is also noted to have a large and prominent scar running along on her back, as a result of Akito pushing her out the window, at the point of admitting the truth about her and Haru's relationship. For clothing, due to Haru's influence, Rin's outfits would range between dark-colored and revealing. Some of which, if not most, have a goth effect to them. As for the accessories that she also wears along with most of her outfits, they were especially handmade by Haru himself. When seen in her school uniform, due to attending an all-girls school along with Kagura, her uniform consists of; a white sweater, a yellow ribbon, and a black turtleneck worn underneath. She also wears a short white skirt, black tights, and dark colored loafers. After being discovered by Akito for attempting to steal the box under Ren's "request", her long hair is soon cut to where she now sports uneven nape length hair. Prior to the start of Fruits Basket, Rin was noted to be a sweet and kind girl at a young age. Although it's worth noting that she had a relatively happy home growing up, things eventually began to take a turn when she began to suffer from a multitude of abuse and abandonment from her parents, constantly. As such, her self-worth and trust in people (aside from Haru, the latter of which she became close with growing up) were destroyed badly. Despite blaming herself for her own misfortunes, followed by the circumstances of believing that her parents wouldn’t have hated and abandoned her if she wasn't viewed as a “bad” child in their eyes, she grew majorly depressed, as a result. And while her parents would never show her an ounce of love or kindness, it's thanks to Haru, that Rin was able to retain her sweet and kind personality as before. At the point when Rin and Haru began a relationship, and that she decided to come clean to Akito about it, as a means of having to protect him from any harm that could potentially be inflicted upon him, she knew she'd find herself facing the latter's wrath soon after. And once Akito has finally learned of the truth to Rin and Haru's secret relationship, this led her to scornfully convince Rin about how someone as damaged as herself doesn’t deserve to be with Haru, much less be loved by him. What's more, the latter's heinous remarks have also managed to trigger Rin's emotions some more, until she proceeded to throw her out of a second story window. With the events of facing Akito's wrath, being hospitalized for an extended amount of time after being thrown out of a window, followed by being disowned from her parents, whom she originally thought that they loved her, the amount of trauma Rin has dealt with caused her former personality to undergo a major change, to the point where she becomes the aggressive, emotionally distant, jaded and unkind young woman she is during her official debut. Despite coming off as sharp-tongued and wielding her words as a weapon, just to lash out at the world for the cruelty she experienced, Haru briefly mentions that Rin doesn’t hesitate to say things that will hurt other people, but she doesn’t say anything to protect herself either. While Rin is considered to be a lone wolf who prefers to solely depend on herself and herself alone, this is very much shown when she becomes incredibly determined to find a way in breaking the curse without the help or interference from anyone, especially from someone like Tohru Honda. The latter of which whom Rin views as nothing more than a mere "outsider" that shouldn't be caught up in the affairs of the Sohma's. Behind the uncaring and aloof front that she displays, Rin is considered to be deeply loyal and passionately emotional, as well as tremendously self-sacrificing, and selfless. As the extent to her reason in finding a way to break the curse was to free Haru and hope he can be able to find his true happiness, even if it would mean that she would be left with nothing in her own hands. Although it initially appears that Rin dislikes kindhearted and empathetic people such as Tohru Honda, she, in reality, respects them deeply— but she also comes to believe that their never-ending compassion is what makes them gullible and unable to protect themselves, meaning she doesn’t want them to get hurt or suffer in any shape or form. On top of that, she also feels like kind people remind herself of how weak she is and how badly she craves acceptance from those kinds of people who she can depend on and cling to. But because of that, she avoids kind people at any cost, since she is unwilling to let herself become a burden. As time goes on, Rin slowly begins to open herself up more, especially after she breaks down in tears in front of both Tohru and Haru on two different occasions. Although she still doesn’t like to show herself emotionally open and her distant and hostile personality remains, she grows openly protective towards Tohru, mellows down to a slightly gentler person, has come to depend on others more, and Haru makes her promise him that she won't ever try to do everything alone again. She is also noted to be quite dishonest with her feelings, rarely shows her feelings of happiness, can have somewhat of a tsundere personality, especially towards Tohru. After the curse is broken, although she feels horrible about it, she refuses to forgive Akito Sohma for not only the pain she had inflicted on her, but everyone in the Sohma family. She also reveals that she'd hoped all of her pain and emotional issues would go away once the curse broke, but they didn't.
