Most of the challenges he faces are overcome by him making use of his cunning, his vast knowledge of the occult sciences, his manipulation of his allies and enemies, and an extensive list of contacts. Constantine 's blood is contaminated; first by a blood transfusion from the demon Nergal and then by having sexual relations with a succubus . This has also been shown to have healing properties and served as a defense mechanism when he was attacked by the king of the vampires. In general, Constantine avoids physical combat against his enemies and only wins these with magical weapons or foul play. Constantine also exhibits considerable mastery of hypnosis, sleight of hand, and escapism.
