Kaoru Orihara

Kaoru Orihara also known as "Kaoru-no-Kimi" (Prince Kaoru), is a 17 year old 1st year highschool girl who is one of the "Magnificent Three". She is the star of the basketball team and known for her tomboyish way of dress and her great athletic skills. She has a mysterious and deadly illness (breast cancer) kept secret from most of her classmates; it's only known in public that she was held back a year due to unnamed health problems. As Rei Asaka's best friend, Kaoru greatly dislikes Fukiko Ichinomiya for everything she has done to Rei and hates the very existence of the Sorority. She spends the series trying to live her life to the fullest in spite of her disease, and is the one who supports Nanako Misonoo when she is bullied and helps Rei when she gets into major trouble. She was romantically involved with Takehiko Henmi (Nanako's "brother"), but she broke it off after her mastectomy (a surgical operation to remove a breaskt). In the manga, she dies 2 years later after getting married to Takehiko and traveling to Germany with him. In the anime, she also marries Takehiko and emigrates to Germany with him, she recovers from breast cancer and gives birth to a healthy baby boy. Her nickname comes from Kaoru Genji, an anti-hero character of Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji. Kaoru is voiced by Keiko Toda.
