Maryland was a Colorado-class battleship commissioned in 1921. Serving as flagship, she traveled to Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. In WWII, she was lightly damaged at Pearl Harbor, then engaged in battles like Midway, Tarawa, and Leyte Gulf, enduring kamikaze attacks. After repairs, she returned to Long Beach upon war's end. Decommissioned in 1947, she was scrapped in 1959, earning seven battle stars.
