Mikuma was the second ship of the Mogami-class "light" cruisers, which became heavy cruisers after adopting the 20.3cm guns. Mikuma served for a rather short period of time. In the Battle of Midway, Mogami crashed into Mikuma due to an improper evasive maneuver. Severely damaged, Mikuma was encircled by USAF and sank. Mikuma was also the very first heavy cruiser that Japan lost during the World War Ⅱ.
