Nao Hotani

Hōtani Nao is a new character from the gacha game, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Mei and Rena's half-sister. Nao is Rena's half-sister from the future, born from the affair of Rena's mother and Akihito. Just like Miyuki and Kazuho, she also time-travels from 1993 to Mei's strange 1983 Hinamizawa. She lives with Kazuho and Miyuki in the Maebara Mansion (while Keiichi and his family lives in Okinomiya). According to her summary on the game's webpage, she time-travels to Hinamizawa with a goal in mind, but as of yet, her plans are unknown. As it was revealed in the game, her backstory is actually somewhat tragic. Her mother's fashion company went bankrupt in the 90's, during the Japanese economic depression. After the bankruptcy Akihito left Nao and her mother and the two of them had to live from hand to mouth. Her mother, becoming increasingly pessimistic, told Nao to give up on her dreams of becoming a fashion designers. Nao tried to get financial support from her father, but he completely abandoned the family and refused to help. Following this, Nao changed her family name to "Hōtani", her mother's maiden name.
