Richard III is the third son of Richard, Duke of York, who is labelled as "demon" and despised by his mother. Richard is intersex and displays both male and female anatomy, but has a fairly ambiguous body shape due to him binding his chest. He is taller than most women but shorter than most men in the series. Despite the fact that he is actually quite muscular due to his devotion to swordplay, Richard is shown to be skinny frail looking. Richard has heterochromia iridium, making his left eye yellow and his right eye purple. He is sensitive about this, so he covers his left eye with his hair. He is noted by other characters to have a "feminine face”. Richard is seen as attractive to both men and women, with some scenes showing him with longer eyelashes and tinted lips, and others presenting him as masculine with no drawn eyelashes or colored lips, displaying the ambiguous nature of his form. Richard is shown from the start to be relatively quiet and inexpressive while around others. Due to his intersexuality, Richard is constantly conflicted about who he is. This is brought on by his mother, who believes that he's cursed. Due to his mother's treatment towards him, Richard believes that he is a "demon child" and that no one (with the exception of his father) truly loves him. He seems to think that his body-- by extension, him as a person-- is unlovable, and decides to dedicate himself to combat instead of forming relationships. Despite usually keeping to himself, Richard is usually honest about what he thinks. He is also shown to be pessimistic in his standpoint of the world around him, considering it “hell”. He often states that he died long ago in later chapters, showing how warped his mind has become.
